Catch Up Again.....

You’ve probably received a posting “testing’. I was trying to see if I could upload from my office computer. (www.gmail.com is not accessible in the office). Well it worked after a fashion. Using my office email works but I cannot get rid of the disclaimer footer nor will it let me upload photos. Real nuisance as it would have made life much easier. It’s not so easy to get home and sit down to write a Blog after a days work. Seems easier to do it during lunchtime etc. So you have this one bigger one giving me time to catch up.

In fact there is a lot of catching up to do. This last year has seen me having difficulty in settling down to write any Blog. Its not that there is nothing to report. Heaps of stuff going on. Just got into a situation where I have been taking pictures and not uploading them. So for this time I’ll make an attempt to catch up. I do need to quickly get up to speed or I’ll fall further back and then end up with so much to do that it will not seem worth it.

You know as I mentioned earlier we drove over from Gladstone to Perth and had 2 months there before moving up to Port Hedland. Perth is a beautiful town where we have taken hundreds of photos. It’s an almost Mediterranean climate but can get cold. It had been know for large hail stones, damaging car roofs etc. They come down the size of golf balls. We stayed in!

We visited lots of places. Beaches, restaurants, shopping malls and did a few trips out into the country. All good to see. Perth also has a lot of status. People and kangaroos. Met both...
Even saw an old harley.

Thai Dinner.  23rd June 2012

I never cease to be amazed that where ever we go there are Thai citizens. I suppose it should not come as such a big surprise given Wanna probably thinks the same where ever she goes there are English speaking people! The 23rd June saw us attending a Thai evening and it comprised a diner and dance.  It was a fund raiser for the local Temple. Perth has one which is situated a few kilometres form the city centre. Worth a visit but nowhere near as impressive and the ones in Thailand. Actually it is just a standard brick structure with little to recommend it. The dinner was an event to raise monies for a new convent. Hope the design of that is better.

On the move again.  9th July 2012

Here we go getting packed to go to Port Hedland. Company is having our car delivered for us and also organising packers for our ‘stuff’. Hardly a lot of things but all useful. We had managed to get it all into our car and bring it over from Gladstone to Perth. Now up to Port Hedland. It really is amazing how stress free moving can be when you know someone else will be doing all the hard work. So off we go.

Port Hedland 10th July 2012

Having not written for so long it’s actually hard to play catch up. I had planned it as I mentioned in an earlier post but... God, to sit down and write is hard. Got so much to say and tell you but getting right frame of mind to go back over stuff is well. You get the picture.
Port Hedland is up in North West Australia. Primary existence is based on it being the biggest iron ore exporting port in Australia and possibly the world. Massive ships and wharfs etc. All covered in red iron ore dust….
The location is beautiful with fabulous sunrises and sunsets etc. Situated on the coast the fishing is unbeatable. Not that in the few weeks we’ve been here there has been any time to catch the big ones. Only tried so far by using a shore side rod and line. One day we’ll get out and do some proper stuff on the open waters. Everyone tells us the fish are out there just waiting to be caught. Photos from other guys tell me that it a true statement.
Port Hedland town has little else to offer. Open country and a small town feel with a single Woollies to cater for day to day shopping.  Several drive through bottle shops and an assortment of hotels etc.  That’s the equivalent to a very small Tesco or Sainsbury. It sells the basics and more. So cannot complain. There are a lot of industrial related shops as well plus the usual fuel and postal services etc. Writing this does not conjure up an exciting place but actually it suits us just fine. You can see from the photos that it is a typical basic Aussie town. Nothing major to recommend it but also nothing to complain about.  We’re happy here. In fact I really like it.  I love the basic, somewhat raw and basically simple or perhaps better described simplistic nature of it all.

Since being here for 6 weeks. We’ve had a couple of day trips out. First to Karratha about 250 kilometres to the south. It also is based on an export port. Just to the south of there is Dampier. Home of ‘Red Dog’. Fabulous film and so we decided we must visit and see the statue of the famous dog. Well worth the trip down. Also visited a small town on the way through called Raebourne, has a small museum located in its old Prison.
The small 'mountains we have photographed are actually termite mounds. About 3 meters high. Loads of them in various spots along the way. I've added in a few shots showing 'wide loads' and open country side.
We’ve also visited Karijini national park. Famous for its gorge’s and waterfalls. We were not so impressed. Its about 3 hours away over similar landscape to the trip to Karratha and again the trip across form Gladstone to Perth so frankly a bit boring. The gouges were Ok. Nothing to special. Hundreds of ‘grey nomads’ in caravans. That’s retired people if you didn’t know!!!!
Also had time for a few road side Bar B Q's. Quite amazing really, just pull over and get the bar b q out, light up and start cooking. The good life...
Unfortunately all good things come to an end and here is no exception.  We’ve just started getting settled down and BHP Billiton, the Client Company has decided to cancel the Outer Harbour Expansion project on which I am working. Having made the decision the next step is lets close down ASAP. It’s a first for me and in a surreal way an interesting one. Time to reflect and relax. Back to Thailand and Seychelles for a while.
Not sure where my next post will be coming from…… So till next time...

Perth WA and of course Rugby

Been in Perth for 5 days. Settled into an apartment and even been to Wollies.... Well today Sunday decided we would go to watch rugby. Western Force the local union team forming part of the super 15's were playing Melbourne Rebels. Obviously I hoped the Force and we lost 31 -32 in the last 2 minutes. Thought I would get the match in before Wanna comes  over and jonis me as then we will be off camping, visiting other places etc. So hopefully some interesting posts to follow. Perth is by any standards a fantastic city. Going to enjoy it here.

Gladstone to Perth 4600 km

Well we're ready to go. This posting is done after arrival in Perth. I know you are wondering why I am not doing it daily. This post will explain. :)
Saturday 08.25. Locked the house. Pressed the remote for the garage, remembering to leave the controller inside the door!
08.30. Said our goodbyes to Noel and Wendy, our very good neighbours for the last 12 months. Then it was off. Only 4600 km to go.The car was full, full and fuller.
09.30 saw us completed 30km arriving at Roses house for our first coffee break. At this rate we'll take forever. But there was a good reason for stopping. We had on departing the house emptied it of all our stuff and as you know when moving there is always some good stuff you don't want to throw out. Hence stopping at Rose's. Give it all away and God knows Wanna needed some more space in the front.
09.30 Finally on the road again. Only 4570 km to go. We set our new GPS to Charleville, a distant town in Western Queensland. Planned to head west and then down to the southern highway which goes all the way to Perth. I had discussed with Wanna that we do about 500km a day enjoy the trip. But....
We started driving. No cars. Continued driving no cars. We appeared to be on back roads but the GPS could not be wrong. On and on we continued. 500 km came and went. We looked at each other and decided to  continue. The car comes with cruise control.  So it was like just sitting watching the country unfold in front of us. It was so easy. On and on we went. 1,000km passed and it was dark. We had only stopped for petrol and a meat pie!!! No cars the whole way after dark. We counted 30 kangaroos, live ones that is and lots and lots of road kill. Can't travel in Australia with eating meat pies so another petrol fill up and carry on...
22,00 and still going.
Sunday 02.00am Tired and low on petrol. Arrived in a place called Cobar. Slept in the car. Done 1,442km only 4,158km to go!!!
Sunday 07.00am. Sun up and off to find our morning meat pies and coffee .You may well ask where is Cobar? Good question. We bought a bumper stick with ' Where the bloody hell is Cbar? New South Wales". Got it in Cobar petrol station before heading off agian. Suspect they are a collectors item as not many are sold outside Cobar. And it is a real one horse town. Very friendly but a long way from anywhere.
Off to Broken Hill and westwards...
Well again to our surprise no cars. The roads were single not dual carriageways which I had expected. On and on with hardly anyone around. Also noted no Roos in the daytime. Again plently of dead ones.
Broken Hill came round very quickly and we pushed on through. Ended up in Nullabor on the eastern side of the Nullabor desert. It was cold and windy. Even had a couple of quick rain showers.
Monday 01.00am Nullabor Road House and sleep again in the car. We had done 1,540km so only 1,718 to go.

Monday 06.30 up and about to view a spectacular coastline. It was cold windy and wet. The Roadhouse coffee was excellent and set us up for a final drive to Perth. This incuded a straight section 145km long! Why the rush I don't know but both of us had decided we just wanted to get there and then get to Thailand. The new job in Perth will give us plenty of time to explore Western Australia in due course. Port Hedland is not the best place in the world to live but it appears to have a lot going for it and plenty of places near by. So more to follow. Enough of the future. We arrived in Perth late Monday evening, well 01.00am Tuesday morning. Now of to do some sight seeing. Sorry not to write more but I just wanted to get this posting out there!

Gladstone To Perth

Simple really. Just jump in car, switch on the GPS (got it from Dick Smiths Electrical and used it last weekend). Fantastic bit of kit. But never shuts up. The voice directions can be male of female, set in Australian English, Brit English or American. Get fed up with one you can sway over....And drive, and drive, and drive.
All we need do to the GPS is punch in Perth and tell it to direct us there, we then follow instructions. ‘Proceed to the next roundabout, take the second exit along Dawson Road. Continue for 500 metres and turn....”. ... Blarr Blarr Blarr.... etc etc. Sounds too easy. Well I’ve been busy checking Google Maps. It will be saying more like ‘At the next roundabout take the second exit and continue for 759 kilometres....”
Gladstone to Perth is a bloody long way. About 4,600 kilometres as the roads go. About John O’Goats to Lands End 6 times or more....But why would you want to go to Lands end 6 times? Next I’ll be telling you I can equate it to several thousand London Double Deckers lined up one behind the other. Trust me it’s Just a long long way.
This has all the makings to be a fabulous journey. We’ll see a lot of Australia. Driving down through the heart of Queensland and then alongside the southern ocean is going to be a whole new experience.
Plan to update this Blog on a daily basis so you all know where we age. If no postings we are anchored up somewhere without internet.
Sunday saw us load up the car. Practice session. Went well. Two big plastic boxes full for kitchen stuff. One suitcase full of ‘more stuff’ and a new tent. Our little one is getting small for us and a new bigger one will make the travel much better. Truth is we are getting soft and the new air mattress will not fit in properly. So dump the mattress or buy bigger. No brainer...Now got a tent we can stand up in. Whole new camping experience coming up.
Last but not least we also crammed in the Bar B Q and my electric guitar and amp. Just enough room left for water, pillows and a dunna ! We finish up in Gladstone on Friday, 20th at 17.00hrs. Then early 21st April we’re off.

Watch this spot.
